Science advocacy to prevent onerous classification of a chemical substance for acute inhalation toxicity

ToxMinds developed the technical argumentation and science advocacy strategy to prevent an onerous, scientifically unjustified classification & labeling (CLH) proposal

A manufacturer of metal-based pigments contracted us to review the scientific basis of a CLH proposal for acute inhalation toxicity by an EU Member State and to propose a strategy how the client could engage with the CLH review process. Our work included a very thorough review of all scientific data relevant to determining the acute inhalation hazard of the substance in question, documented in a science background paper, as well as the determination of the status of CLH process in a first fact finding phase. Subsequently, we developed the technical background documents questioning the scientific basis of the classification proposal and supported the clients’ advocacy activities by developing the clients input to the public consultation of the CLH proposal and reviewing the matter at EU Commission level.
